Sunset at Big Sur
After acquiring the equatorial buzz-cut, today was all about miles and scenery. I made it all the way through San Francisco without taking a wrong turn. Not small feat considering the 101 was cruising along like Calgary Trail on a Friday. Map in one hand, wheel in the other. This is the view from the point overlooking the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Nice to have some good weather for the shots.
As soon as I was past the bridge, I got onto the #1 along the western sea-board so as to avoid all the head-aches with the other interstates. I was considering trying to make it over to Vegas from here, but what a nightmare. There are very few roads that connect from Sand Fran, so the #1 it is. What an awesome drive. The best views are where I took the pics, about 10 miles north of Big Sur, but don’t take your eyes off the road for long. It’s a helluva drop.
I am at a place called the Big Sur River Inn. It’s sort of like Guadalahara (sp?) in Panama. Quiet, cool, a little pricey, but the restaurant has the best food I’ve had so far. Gas here is a rip-off at $3.99/Gal and is only $2.39/Gal fifty miles north in Monterey. It’s a long way from here to Cambria or Morro Bay, so tank up before you leave Monterey. Oh, and coming in the off-season has it’s advantages $$ wise.
Looking back, I hear that there were blizzards and white-out conditions along the interior when I was whinging about the rain. Obviously, it could’ve been worse had I decided to make time and distance instead of scenery and atmosphere. My odometer has rolled past 4000 km now. I haven’t even made Vegas. Or L.A. I think I may have underestimated the length of this trip. Slightly. Down a 1/2 L in oil and it is brown and clear. All good.
Thanks to all who have sent e-mails over the past few days. There aren’t too many people I recognise around here and it’s good to be ‘in touch’. Jon, how ’bout that gold? Mike, your inbox is full.
The connection I have here isn’t the best, so I had better save this page before I lose the connection.
