Brain Sweats
Today and yesterday were spend studying Spanish. When I took it in Guatemala, they taught present tense, and then past tense, so what I have to go on are conjugations of different verbs, both past and present, separated by about 15 pages or so. The constant flipping back and forth just doesn’t allow it to set in.
There are more tenses in Spanish than there are days of the week, and I didn’t learn how to say words ending with “ing” or “ly”, which are pretty damn important. I don’t even know what tense they are called.
So I have been making little cards for myself.
A verb, conjugation in present and past, and how to say it “ing” and “ly”. I have a vocabulary of over 100 verbs I have to copy and deal with, and the improvement is noticeable already just by doing this. But my brain is tired. This is a break, one of many, and not to be the last.
Once I am done, I will have a good little set of cards to glance at whenever, without having to flip through all those pages. Just look for the word and it’s all there. I should have done it like this in the first place, but my brain was tired then too.
Y’know, you get a little tired of being corrected all the time, especially over the same mistakes. Truth be told, being corrected by the locals is a compliment in itself, as they are truly trying to help. I have been a fly on the wall to several difficult conversations with other “gringos” who they just let suffer through, and then correct me when I attempt my piece (and even speak a little English to help out). But, obviously, I wasn’t learning, so a little more effort on my part was in order.
I am certainly no dumb-ass, but I sure sound like one down here!! I understand what immigrants go through. Those that actually TRY to learn my language, I will have patience for, but those who have lived in my country for years and can still barely understand, can Kiss My ASS!! I ain’t shy about it, either. It is the same down here. Just a matter of respect.
Rant off. So I have made it through to the letter F now.
