Pining for a re-defining
Let me be the first to say Yechhhh!
This laundry room has always been a nemesis of mine, in particular, the poorly “thought out” shelving area to the left of the freezer. I just don’t know what they were “thinking” during the planning stage, but it is a spectacularly awkward array of inaccessibility. Simply put, it is another branch of Elliot’s “fuck it” tree that I am now going to sever.
This is another one of those multi-stage jobs, that begins with one area, takes a pause, and resumes again when the time is right.
Not just the appliances needed to move, but all the shelving emptied so anything touching the floor could also be removed to get at the lino. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, a good pair of gloves and a fan were essentials.
Back and forth, picking away at it, I later found the floor scraper was ideal for this. Imagine that! I did everywhere I could reach, leaving only underneath the water tank for later – sometime.
Laying out the tiles in line with marks I had made last year allowed grout lines to stay straight, and carried around corners.
I can’t remember how I thought it through, but the last few tiles boxed me in somewhat. I made it out though. Hunger is a great motivator.
Now, for those damn shelves!!! Even empty you can see the bottlenecks.
Rip and tear, you can see it turned out easier that I thought, but still didn’t make any sense to me why it was built that way.
Gone! Was a bitchy little mess to deal with, but neat once done. You can see below the extra headroom that was gained. Drywall repairs, mud, and paint, and we’re on the way to test fitting..
the shelves, and developing a solution…
which began with tiles and grout.
A little “discovery” project ensued to support the shelves where the wall had been, without drilling a hole in the floor, or making a leg so large as to be in the way.
Those shelves are rock solid, the little rubber foot is grippy under the weight, and now I can reach all the way back into the corner without kissing a wall. Later, I hung a secondary shelf from the top shelf, and tickety boo! She’s a goner!
Awesome!
